My Story…

Hi! My name is Georgette Brackett. I am a postpartum doula and the owner of Legacy Doula Care. My husband Ernest and I are the proud parents of two beautiful and vivacious little boys. I consider it my life’s greatest honor and privilege to be their mother. They are my treasured teachers and most precious blessings.

My favorite times are spent with my husband and sons traveling abroad or outdoors in nature – whether it’s snowboarding or hiking with our loyal Golden Retriever. My happy place is by the fire with an old fashioned or under palm trees with a mojito – listening to music and laughing with my enormous and wonderful families.

My journey to becoming a postpartum doula was deeply motivated by my own personal postpartum experiences. I joined the ranks of motherhood with tremendous excitement and joy, as so many do. I embraced this new role with open arms and an open heart, confident in my ability to be an amazing mother – hopefully!

Yet, I found myself ultimately caught off guard when the realities of caring for a tiny human finally set in and the intense physical, emotional, and psychological demands began to add up. This grappling was only exacerbated by the fact that I lacked the awareness and understanding of my own real needs at the time.

What is truly involved in healing from pregnancy and childbirth? I had received no education of what this should look like, much less how to prioritize and facilitate it. I believed the status quo messages surrounding me – that all I needed to do was “carry on as normal” and “get my body back” and everything would be “fine.” However, I soon realized that these common and unrealistic expectations were nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

It has been said that birth is a reckoning, and this most certainly true. I believe that postpartum represents its own reckoning as well —a period for which our culture and society most often leaves parents, especially mothers, ill-prepared. We are not taught to honor this time as sacred, a window that requires intentional effort and dedication to support our healing and long-term well-being.

I want to be a part of the change and have a share in the solution to this problem. I want mothers to know they deserve better. For this reason, it is my sincerest desire to support my fellow mothers and their families as they transition to life with a new baby. I believe the best way to do this is to care for the mother and her individualized needs. Caring for the mother is the gateway to caring for the baby and the entire family.

A Legacy of Care

On my personal journey, I have been blessed to have a great many supporters, all of whom I have lovingly referred to as my “doulas” at one time or another. These are my dearest mothers, sisters, nieces, aunts, cousins, and friends. There is tremendous power at work amongst women who truly care and show up for each other in their most vulnerable and transitional seasons of life. We are not meant to do this alone.

I chose the name Legacy to honor these mothers and women who have guided, nurtured, and inspired me through their enduring love and shining examples. It is a shared legacy that I am proud to be a part of. And I hope to continue to grow and learn alongside the courageous mothers with whom I have the privilege of supporting as theirs unfolds.
